EWING, MAYERS, SPEER, STEWART posted by Susan J. Brown on 06/11/98
Evaline EWING, b ca 1830 in Mercer (now Lawrence) Co, PA, was the dau of James & Eleanor (?) EWING. In 1850 in Lawrence Co, at the time of a Petition for the Estate of her father James who had died 17 years earlier, court notes were sent to Evaline STEWART in Poland, OH. I know that Evaline had a sister Mary EWING, b 1823, d 1845, m John W. SPEER; and a brother, Thomas G. EWING, b ca 1829, m Mary J. MAYERS. Because of the petition information, I have to assume that Evaline EWING married a STEWART and was in Poland, OH at that time. Any info on her and/or her family would be greatly appreciated. I have tons information on her "branches" and would be glad to share it.

EWING, MAYERS, PADEN, WALKER posted by Susan J. Brown on 06/11/98
Thomas G. EWING, b ca 1831 in what is now Lawrence Co, PA, was the son of James & Eleanor (?) EWING. Thomas G. EWING m Mary J. MAYERS of Mercer Co, PA. They had 6 children: Mary Malissa b ca 1851, d 1936, m R. Oliver WALKER; Elizabeth b ca 1855; Clarissa Emma, b ca 1858; Sarah Jane, b ca 1860, m.L. C. PADEN; William Scott b ca 1867; and Lulu M. b ca 1870. I've been chasing Thomas G. EWING around for several years now and happened upon his wife's (Mary J. MAYERS EWING) will filed at the Mercer Co courthouse. Her residence of death was Youngstown, Mahoning Co, OH. The will was finally probated in the state of OH, Mahoning Co on 28 Feb 1890. It was written 19 Jul 1888 and at that time her husband Thomas EWING was still living. She owned land in Shenango Twp, Mercer Co, PA, and it was to be sold *after* the death of her husband. The money was to be divided among her children. I do not know what happened to this branch of the EWING family. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I have tons of info on this EWING family and would be glad to share it.

BEWICK posted by Marilyn Cossler Garrison on 06/28/98
Recently I checked Microfilm of 1850 census for Mahoning Co, OH. I found a John BEWICK, age 28, male, England native. His occupation was listed as a "collier". I believe that is the correct spelling. It was difficult to decipher due to the handwriting. I noticed a number of people who had the word "collier" next to their name. To what does this term refer? Thank you.

CAHILL, MCNUTT, MUSSER, SMITH posted by Kerrin Smith Winter on 06/28/98
Looking for info about the Peter SMITH family that migrated to Columbiana Co. Peter SMITH was b near Hagerstown MD in 1711. He married Sophia CAHILL. Peter SMITH purchased land in Columbiana Co from Peter MUSSER (Petersburge is named for him). I am missing a generation because my information then begins again with William SMITH who was b in 1817. William SMITH (aka "Squire SMITH") m Rachael MCNUTT and together they produced many children including David SMITH, born in 1843. David SMITH is for whom (I'm told) "Smith Township" was named (now in Mahoning Co). This information has been passed down to me by my great grandfather Clarence Nester SMITH of Cleveland, OH. It seems that in his later years, he took an interest in researching his family roots. Unfortunately, he did not get too far before age took him away from his research. Any leads to this information would be terrific. In particular, any information of historical reference to these pioneers of Columbiana and Mahoning County. I'll be happy to share what little I have. It appears from my Great Grandfather's notes that the Smith's of Columbiana and Mahoning family were a prominent family with a lot to do with the settlement of that region. I would love to learn more. Did anyone serve in the wars? Anyone related? the Father of Peter SMITH (originally from Germany) can anyone tell me about him? Peter SMITH, b 1711, d 1787 Columbiana Co; missing a generation; William, b 1817, Petersburge, Mahoning Co. Children of William SMITH and Rachel MCNUTT: Peter, b1840, who had Blanch and Sherman; Sarah, b1841, who had no children; David, b 1843, who had Mary and Ruth; William, b1848, who had Harry, Daisy, Charles and May; Cowden, b1850, who had Clarence, Disney, .....my line; George Sutton, b 1853, he had, Frank, Edith, Florence and Rachel who had no children; Cowden M. SMITH is my great, great grandfather; my great grandfather was Clarence Nester SMITH, b 1874, d 1967, who had Floyd, Edgar D,and Disney; my grandfather was Edgar Dewey SMITH, b 1898, d1987; my father was Clarence Edgar SMITH, b 1921, d 1985.
